Mouthwash: your questions answered

Alcohol-free or regular mouthwash: which should I choose?
Alcohol-free mouthwashes, such as those from TheraBreath and Tom's of Maine, have a milder feel, and many people find them more comfortable for everyday use. Traditional alcohol-based rinses give a stronger, more tingling sensation. Both are designed to freshen the mouth. Check the label for age suitability, as most mouthwashes aren't intended for young children, and never swallow mouthwash.
When should I use mouthwash?
Use mouthwash at a different time of day from brushing, for example after lunch, so it adds to rather than replaces your routine. Measure out the amount shown on the label, swish for the stated time, usually 30 to 60 seconds, then spit it out. Mouthwash isn't a substitute for brushing and cleaning between your teeth, but it's a pleasant way to freshen up during the day.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice in which you swish a spoonful of oil, often coconut or sesame, around the mouth for several minutes before spitting it out. Ready-made oil pulling rinses, such as GuruNanda's, add flavours like mint to make it more pleasant. Spit the oil into a bin rather than the sink, as it can solidify in pipes. Use it alongside brushing, not instead of it.
