Lip care: your questions answered

What's the difference between a lip balm and an overnight lip mask?
Lip balms are designed for everyday wear, with a firmer texture that stays on the lips through the day. Overnight lip masks are richer and thicker, applied generously before bed so you wake up to softer-feeling lips. Lip oils and serums sit in between, adding shine and a cushiony feel. Many people keep a balm in their bag and a mask by the bed.
Should my lip balm have SPF?
Lips have little natural protection from the sun, so a balm with SPF is a sensible choice for daytime, particularly outdoors, on the slopes or on holiday. Eucerin and Jack Black both make SPF lip balms. Reapply regularly, as balm wears off with eating and drinking. At night, switch to a balm or mask without SPF, which tends to feel richer and more comfortable.
How do I care for dry, chapped lips?
Apply balm little and often, especially before going out in cold or windy weather. A gentle lip scrub once a week, or a soft damp flannel, removes flaky bits; try not to pick. Balms with shea butter, petrolatum or ceramides, such as those from eos, feel especially comforting. Running a humidifier in winter and choosing fragrance-free formulas can also make a difference to how lips feel.
