Fragrance & mists: your questions answered

What's the difference between eau de parfum, eau de toilette and cologne?
It comes down to the concentration of perfume oils. Eau de parfum is the richest of the three, so it tends to last longer on the skin. Eau de toilette is lighter and fresher, ideal for daytime. Cologne is lighter again, often citrusy and refreshing. Body mists are the most sheer and designed to be spritzed generously. Wear time also depends on your skin and the notes in the scent.
Why are Middle Eastern fragrance houses so popular?
Houses such as Lattafa, Rasasi and Swiss Arabian draw on a long tradition of perfumery, with rich notes like oud, amber, rose, musk and vanilla. Their eaux de parfum are known for strong projection and long wear. They've built a large following in the US and UK, particularly among people who enjoy warm, statement fragrances that feel distinctive.
How do I make my fragrance last longer?
Apply to moisturised skin, as scent clings better than it does to dry skin. Spray on pulse points such as the wrists, neck and behind the ears, and don't rub your wrists together, which can blur the top notes. Layering with an unscented or matching body lotion also helps. Store bottles away from sunlight, heat and bathroom humidity, ideally in their box, so the scent stays as the perfumer intended.
