Feeding: your questions answered

How do I choose the right teat flow?
Teats come in flow levels, usually marked on the teat or pack with a level number or age guide, such as newborn or 3m+. Start with the slowest flow and move up only if feeds seem slow or your baby seems frustrated, following the manufacturer's guidance. Teats are usually brand and neck specific, so check they match your bottles. Dr. Brown's, for example, makes separate narrow and wide-neck teats.
How should I clean and sterilise bottles and cups?
Before first use and after every feed, wash bottles, teats and parts in hot, soapy water with a bottle brush, then rinse. Sterilise feeding equipment for babies under 12 months by steam, boiling or cold-water sterilising, following the manufacturer's instructions for each part. Take straw cups fully apart to clean the straw and valve. Inspect teats and straws regularly and replace any that are cracked, torn or sticky.
When can my baby start using a cup?
Many babies are introduced to an open or free-flow cup from around six months, alongside solid foods. First straw cups and weighted straw cups, from brands like Munchkin and NUK, help little ones learn to sip, and some work at any angle. Check the age stage on the pack, wash cups thoroughly after each use, and always supervise your baby while they're eating and drinking.
