Home & outdoors: your questions answered

How do I find the right replacement part or filter?
Match the part number on your existing filter or part, or check your vehicle, machine or equipment manual, rather than going by appearance alone. Oil filters from brands such as K&N list compatible models by part number. If you're unsure, compare dimensions and thread size, and ask a qualified mechanic or the equipment manufacturer before fitting.
Do US tools and fittings use different sizes?
Often, yes. US tools, fasteners and hose fittings are usually measured in inches and fractions, such as 5/8 or 3/8 inch, rather than millimetres, and thread standards can differ from UK and European fittings. Check the measurements on the listing against what you already have before buying, and use adaptors designed for the job where you need to connect the two.
How do I look after swimming gear?
Rinse swim caps, goggles and costumes in cool, fresh water after every swim to remove chlorine or salt, then let them air dry away from direct sunlight and heat. Silicone caps, such as those from Speedo and TYR, keep their shape best when dried flat. Store goggles in a case to protect the lenses, and avoid touching the inside of the lenses, which can wear away the anti-fog coating.
