Grooming & care: your questions answered

How often should I bathe my dog?
It depends on your dog's coat and lifestyle. Many dogs only need a bath every few weeks, or when they're muddy, as frequent washing can dry out the coat. Use a shampoo made for dogs, like Earthbath's, with lukewarm water, keep it away from the eyes and ears, and rinse thoroughly. Between baths, pet wipes and regular brushing keep the coat fresh.
How do I brush my pet's teeth?
Use a toothpaste made for pets, never human toothpaste, and a pet toothbrush or finger brush. Start slowly: let your pet taste the toothpaste first, then gently brush a few teeth at a time, building up over several days. Short, calm sessions with plenty of praise work well. Enzymatic toothpastes, such as Vet's Best, come in flavours pets enjoy. Your vet can show you the technique.
What does a deshedding tool do?
A deshedding tool, such as the FURminator, has fine teeth that reach through the topcoat to lift loose undercoat hair before it ends up on your sofa. Use it on a dry, tangle-free coat, in the direction of hair growth, with light strokes for a few minutes at a time. Choose the size and tooth length that suits your pet's size and coat, as recommended on the pack.
