Cleaning & laundry: your questions answered

How do I tackle tough laundry stains?
Act quickly, and blot rather than rub. Check the garment's care label, then apply a stain remover or a little liquid detergent directly to the mark before washing, following the product directions. Stain pens and sprays, such as those from Shout and Tide, are handy for spills on the go. Test on a hidden area first for delicate or coloured fabrics, and avoid tumble drying until the stain has gone.
What's the difference between fabric softener and dryer sheets?
Liquid fabric softener goes in the washing machine's softener drawer and leaves clothes feeling softer and scented. Dryer sheets, such as Downy's, go in the tumble dryer with damp clothes to reduce static and add fragrance. Scent beads are added to the drum at the start of the wash. Skip softener on towels you want to stay really absorbent, and on sportswear if the label advises.
How do I use a powder or cream cleanser on kitchen surfaces?
Powder and cream cleansers lift tough marks from stainless steel, ceramic hobs, sinks and cookware. Wet the surface, sprinkle or squeeze on a small amount, work it in gently with a damp non-scratch sponge, then rinse well and wipe dry. Always test on a small, hidden area first and check the surface manufacturer's guidance. Wear gloves for longer cleaning sessions.
