Pet Supplies: your questions answered
How do I introduce a new food or litter to my pet?
Change gradually over about a week, mixing a little of the new product with the old and increasing the proportion each day. Pets can be creatures of habit, and a slow switch gives them time to get used to new textures, tastes and smells. Follow the feeding or usage guidance on the pack, and speak to your vet if you have questions about your pet's diet.
Why use grooming and dental products made for pets?
Pet shampoos, toothpastes and wipes are formulated for animals, with flavours and pH levels designed for them. Human toothpaste, for instance, isn't meant for pets and shouldn't be used on them; pet toothpastes, such as Virbac's, are made for animals that can't rinse and spit. Always check which species and age a product is labelled for, as some are for dogs only.
How should I store pet food?
Keep dry food in its original bag, ideally inside an airtight container, which helps keep it fresh and keeps pests out; Gamma2's containers are designed for exactly this. Store it somewhere cool and dry, and note the best-before date on the bag. Wash containers between refills. Once opened, wet food should be covered, refrigerated and used within the time on the label.
How do I read US pet product sizes?
US pet products are often sized in pounds and inches. Divide pounds by 2.2 to get kilograms, so a 20 lb bag of litter is about 9 kg, and multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres. For leads, harnesses and gates, check the weight range or measurements against your pet or doorway, rather than relying on labels like small, medium or large.
