Deodorant: your questions answered

What's the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?
Deodorants work on odour, often with fragrance and ingredients that keep underarms smelling fresh, but they don't reduce sweat. Antiperspirants contain aluminium salts that temporarily reduce the amount of sweat reaching the skin. Many products combine the two. If you prefer to avoid aluminium, choose a deodorant labelled aluminium-free, such as those from Native or Tom's of Maine.
When should I apply antiperspirant?
Many antiperspirants, including the stronger US formulas from Secret, suggest applying at night to clean, completely dry underarms, and again in the morning if you wish. Applying before bed gives the product time to settle while you're cool and still. Follow the directions on your pack, avoid applying to freshly shaved or irritated skin, and let it dry before dressing.
What is talc-free body powder for?
Body powders absorb moisture and help skin feel dry and comfortable in warm weather, during exercise or on long days. Talc-free versions use ingredients like cornstarch or arrowroot instead. Apply a light dusting to clean, dry skin, such as under the arms, behind the knees or anywhere clothing rubs. Powder sprays and lotion-to-powder creams are less messy alternatives.
