Cat litter & trays: your questions answered

Clumping, crystal, pellet or plant-based: which cat litter should I choose?
Clumping clay litters, like Fresh Step and Tidy Cats, form solid clumps that are easy to scoop. Silica crystal litters absorb moisture and are very light. Pellet litters made from paper, pine or wood are low-dust and track less. Plant-based litters made from corn, wheat or tofu are lighter and clump well. Many cats are particular about texture, so stick with what yours likes.
How deep should cat litter be, and how many trays do I need?
A depth of around 5 to 7 cm suits most cats and litters, though check the pack, as some pellet systems use less. A common guide is one tray per cat plus one extra, placed in quiet spots away from food and water bowls. Scoop daily, and fully replace the litter and wash the tray as often as your litter type requires.
Do litter tray liners and deodorisers help?
Liners make it quicker to empty and clean a tray, though some cats scratch through them, so choose a heavy-duty size that fits your tray. Litter deodorisers can be sprinkled into the litter between changes; unscented or lightly scented options are a safer bet, as many cats dislike strong fragrance. A litter disposal pail keeps used litter sealed away until bin day.
