Body wash & soap: your questions answered
Body wash or bar soap: which should I choose?
Body washes are easy to lather with a sponge or puff and come in creamy, moisturising formulas and fresh gels. Bar soaps are compact, travel-friendly and use less packaging. If your skin feels dry after washing, look for a creamy wash or a syndet bar, which is made with milder cleansers than traditional soap. Dove and eos both offer creamy, moisturising washes.
How do I use a body scrub?
Use a scrub on damp skin in the shower, once or twice a week. Massage it in with gentle circular movements, focusing on rougher areas such as elbows, knees and heels, then rinse. Avoid scrubbing freshly shaved skin or skin that feels sore. Charcoal and salt scrubs feel more invigorating, while sugar and cream-based ones are softer. Follow with a body moisturiser while skin is still damp.
Are bath salts and magnesium flakes used the same way?
Both dissolve in a warm bath to create a more indulgent soak. Bath salts, including Epsom salts, often come scented, while magnesium flakes, such as those from NOW Foods, are usually unscented and sold in larger bags. Follow the amount suggested on the pack, swirl until dissolved and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off afterwards and moisturise, as salts can leave skin feeling slightly dry.
