Brushes & tools: your questions answered

How often should I clean makeup brushes?
Aim to wash brushes used with liquids and creams weekly, and powder brushes every couple of weeks. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water, keeping the base of the brush head dry, then work in a brush cleanser, a solid brush wash bar or a gentle soap. Rinse until the water runs clear, reshape, and lay brushes flat or bristles down to dry so water doesn't loosen the glue.
How do I use a makeup sponge?
Run the sponge under water and squeeze out the excess, and it will expand to its full size. Bounce, rather than drag, product onto the skin for a natural, skin-like finish; the pointed end reaches around the nose and under the eyes. Real Techniques sponges are a popular US choice. Wash sponges after every few uses and replace them every couple of months, or sooner if they tear.
Which makeup brushes do I need to start?
Three or four brushes cover most looks: a flat or dense brush for foundation, a fluffy brush for powder or bronzer, a small fluffy brush for blending eyeshadow and an angled brush for brows. Synthetic bristles work well with creams and liquids and are easy to clean. Brushes and sets from e.l.f. and EcoTools are a straightforward way to build a kit.
