Oils & aromatherapy: your questions answered
How do I use essential oils safely?
Essential oils are highly concentrated, so always dilute them in a carrier oil, such as jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, before applying to skin, following the dilution on the bottle. Do a patch test first. Never take essential oils by mouth, keep them away from the eyes, and store them out of reach of children and pets. If you're pregnant, ask a pharmacist before use.
What is a carrier oil?
A carrier oil is a mild plant oil that can be used on its own as a skin or hair oil, or to dilute essential oils. Jojoba, argan, rosehip and fractionated coconut oil are popular choices, each with a different feel: jojoba is light, rosehip a little richer, and fractionated coconut stays liquid and non-greasy. Cliganic and Trilogy both offer single-ingredient oils. Store them away from heat and light.
How can I make a bath feel more like a spa?
Add bath oil, salts or flakes as the warm water runs so they disperse evenly. Avon's Skin So Soft bath oil leaves skin feeling soft, while Epsom salts and magnesium flakes are popular for long, unscented soaks. If you like a scent, mix a few drops of essential oil into a carrier or bath oil rather than adding it straight to the water. Take care getting out, as oils make the bath slippery.
