Makeup: your questions answered
How do I find my foundation shade online?
Start with a shade you already know works, then compare its depth and undertone with the new range. Undertones are usually described as cool (pink), warm (golden) or neutral. Korean brands such as TIRTIR often use a number and letter, such as 21N, where the number shows depth and the letter shows undertone. Swatch on the jawline in daylight when you can, and remember shades look different on screen.
How does Korean makeup differ from US makeup?
Korean makeup often focuses on a fresh, skin-like finish, with cushion compacts, BB creams and sheer, glossy lip tints. US makeup from brands such as e.l.f. and NYX Professional Makeup tends to offer bolder pigment, matte finishes and wide shade ranges in brow and eye products. Neither approach is better; many people pair a Korean base with US eye and brow products.
How long does makeup last once opened?
Look for the open-jar symbol on the pack, which shows how many months a product is designed to be used after opening, such as 12M. Some US products don't show it, so jot the opening date on the base. As a rough guide, mascara and liquid eyeliner are usually replaced every three months, and creams and liquids sooner than powders. Bin anything that changes smell or texture.
What goes in a simple everyday makeup kit?
A good starting point is a light base, such as a BB cream or cushion, a concealer for small areas, a brow pencil, a mascara and a tinted lip product. That covers most daily looks in a few minutes. Add a setting powder if you get shiny, and a cream blush or bronzer for warmth. Brushes or a damp sponge help everything blend more naturally.
