Feminine care: your questions answered

How do I choose the right tampon absorbency?
Choose the lowest absorbency that suits your flow on each day, as the leaflet in the box advises, and change tampons as often as directed. US tampons, such as Tampax and Playtex, use standard absorbency names that run from Light through Regular and Super to Ultra. Many people keep a mixed pack to match lighter and heavier days. Always read the leaflet inside the box before use.
Pads, liners or menstrual cups: what's the difference?
Panty liners are thin and suit very light days or use as a backup with a tampon or cup. Pads, or sanitary towels, come in different lengths and absorbencies, with overnight versions that are longer at the back. Organic cotton options, such as Rael's, have a cotton top layer. Menstrual cups are reusable and come in sizes; empty, rinse and clean them as the instructions say.
How should I use an intimate wash?
Intimate washes are for external use only and are milder than standard shower gel, with a pH and fragrance level suited to the intimate area. Use a small amount with water once a day, rinse well and pat dry. Never use any wash internally. If you notice unusual changes or discomfort, speak to your GP or pharmacist rather than simply switching products.
