Nappies & changing: your questions answered

How do US nappy sizes compare to UK sizes?
US and UK size numbers don't always line up, so go by weight rather than size number. US packs from Pampers and Huggies list weight in pounds; divide by 2.2 to convert to kilograms, so 22 lb is about 10 kg. Move up a size if you notice red marks on the legs or tummy, frequent leaks, or when your baby reaches the top of the weight range.
What are training pants for?
Training pants, such as Pull-Ups, pull up and down like underwear, which helps toddlers practise using the potty or toilet on their own. Most have tear-away or refastenable sides for quick changes, and many families use them during the day with nappies at night. Swim nappies are different: they're designed for the pool and aren't made to absorb like regular nappies, so use them only in water.
How do I choose baby wipes?
Wipes vary in thickness, moisture and ingredients. Water-based and fragrance-free wipes are popular for newborns, while thicker, textured wipes handle bigger clean-ups. Keep packs closed so wipes don't dry out, and store them away from heat. Put used wipes in a nappy bin or bag rather than flushing them, even if the packaging says they're biodegradable.
