Omega & fish oils: your questions answered

How do I compare omega-3 supplements?
Look past the total fish oil figure on the front and check the amounts of EPA and DHA per serving, the omega-3s usually listed on the back. Two products with the same fish oil weight can contain quite different amounts. Also note the serving size, as it may be two or three softgels. Brands like Nordic Naturals and Carlson list EPA and DHA clearly on their labels.
Fish, krill, cod liver or algae oil: what's the difference?
Fish oil usually comes from small oily fish such as anchovies and sardines. Krill oil comes from tiny crustaceans, so check the allergen warnings if you avoid shellfish. Cod liver oil naturally contains vitamins A and D, so keep an eye on your total intake of these from other products. Algae oil is a plant-based source of omega-3 suited to vegetarians and vegans, and flax and sea buckthorn oils are other plant options.
How should I store fish oil?
Keep fish oil capsules and liquids away from heat and light, with the lid tightly closed. Liquid oils usually need refrigerating after opening, so check the label. A strong fishy smell when you open the bottle can be a sign the oil is past its best. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied diet. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
