A cheesy-tasting seasoning for dairy-free cooking

These flakes are made from the single-celled yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, grown on cane and beet molasses, then harvested, washed, pasteurised and dried with heat to deactivate it. Because the yeast is inactive it does not act as a leavening agent, and it instead adds a creamy texture or a nutty flavour.

Where it fits in the kitchen

Frontier Co-op suggests using the flakes in place of cheese on pasta, salads, nachos and crackers, or in cheese sauce, soups, gravies and egg-less scrambles. The flakes are labelled kosher and non-irradiated, and the brand is member owned since 1976.

How to use

Sprinkle the flakes over pasta, salads, popcorn or crackers, or stir them into sauces, soups and gravies. Add them as a savoury seasoning in place of grated cheese. Follow the serving suggestions on the pack.
