Daily care for sensitive teeth

Sensodyne explains that sensitivity often begins when enamel wears away or gums recede, leaving the dentin underneath exposed to hot and cold food and drinks. This paste is made for people with that kind of sensitivity, and the US label lists it as an antihypersensitivity and anticavity toothpaste. The brand says protection builds with twice-daily brushing.

Whitening and a triple-action clean

As well as sensitivity care, the Extra Whitening version uses a triple-action cleaning formula, according to the brand. It also contains fluoride to help protect against cavities, so it can replace your usual everyday paste.

What comes in the pack

You get two tubes of Sensodyne Extra Whitening, each holding 4 oz (113 g). A twin pack means a spare tube is ready when the first runs out, or one can be kept in a second bathroom.

How to use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: apply at least a 1-inch (about 2.5 cm) strip to a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush thoroughly for at least one minute twice a day, morning and evening, and not more than three times a day, or as a dentist or doctor recommends. Make sure you brush all sensitive areas. Keep swallowing to a minimum and spit out after brushing. Children under 12 should consult a dentist or doctor.

Before you choose

This toothpaste is not a substitute for dental care: stop use and ask a dentist if the problem persists or worsens, or if sensitivity continues after four weeks of use. Keep out of reach of children; if more than the amount used for brushing is swallowed, get medical help straight away. Do not store above 30°C, and always follow the label. US-market product: packaging and label wording may differ from UK versions.

Full ingredients

Active: Potassium nitrate 5%; sodium fluoride 0.24% (0.15% w/v fluoride ion).

Inactive: Water, hydrated silica, sorbitol, glycerin, pentasodium triphosphate, peg-8, flavor, titanium dioxide, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, xanthan gum, sodium hydroxide, sodium saccharin, sucralose.
