Cleansers: your questions answered

What is double cleansing and do I need it?
Double cleansing means using an oil or balm cleanser first to melt away makeup and sunscreen, then a water-based cleanser to wash the face. It's a Korean routine staple and is most useful in the evening, especially if you wear long-wear makeup or water-resistant SPF. In the morning, a single gentle cleanse, or simply a splash of water, is usually enough.
Cream, foam, gel or bar: which cleanser should I choose?
Cream and lotion cleansers, like CeraVe's hydrating formulas, feel soft and leave a comfortable finish, which suits drier skin. Foams and gels lather more and give a fresher, squeaky-clean feel that many oilier skin types like. Cleansing bars, such as those from Vanicream, are a compact, low-waste option; look for bars made for the face rather than ordinary soap, which can feel drying.
How do I use a cleansing oil or balm?
Apply it to a dry face with dry hands and massage gently for around a minute, paying attention to the hairline and around the nose. Add a little water to emulsify it, so it turns milky, then rinse thoroughly. Around the eyes, keep movements light and keep the product out of the eyes themselves. Micellar water and makeup remover wipes are handy alternatives for travel or late nights.
