Shaving & grooming: your questions answered

How do I get a more comfortable shave?
Shave after a warm shower, when hair is softer. Apply a shave cream, gel or butter and leave it for a minute, then shave in the direction of hair growth with light strokes. Rinse the blade often and replace it as soon as it starts to drag. Finish with a cool rinse and an alcohol-free post-shave balm or gel. Jack Black's shave lathers are a popular US choice.
Beard oil or beard balm: what's the difference?
Beard oil is lighter and absorbs into the beard and the skin underneath, keeping hair soft and adding a slight sheen. It suits shorter beards and daily use. Beard balm contains butters and waxes, so it adds light hold and helps tame longer or unruly beards. Many people use oil in the morning and balm when they want more control. Striking Viking and Viking Revolution make both.
How should I use hair removal cream?
Always do the patch test described on the pack before first use, and only use the cream on the areas it's designed for, as face and body formulas differ. Apply an even layer to dry skin, leave it for no longer than the stated time, then remove with the spatula and rinse thoroughly with cool water. Avoid broken skin, and don't apply deodorant or perfume to the area straight afterwards.
