Colgate Total Whitening combines its whitening formula with stannous fluoride, which helps protect against cavities as part of twice-daily brushing. The manufacturer states it provides 24-hour antibacterial protection when used twice daily. The ingredient list also includes potassium nitrate.

How to use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: squeeze at least a 1-inch strip onto a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush thoroughly for at least one minute, twice a day (morning and evening), or as a dentist recommends. Brush all sensitive areas. Do not swallow. Children under 12 should ask a dentist.

Before you choose

Surface whitening relies on regular brushing, so results vary. If using for sensitivity, do not use for longer than 4 weeks unless a dentist recommends it. Stop use and ask a dentist if sensitivity persists or worsens, or if gingivitis, bleeding or redness lasts more than two weeks, or you have painful or swollen gums, pus from the gum line, loose teeth or increasing spacing between teeth. Keep out of reach of children. If more than the amount used for brushing is swallowed by accident, get medical help or contact a poison control centre straight away.
