PanOxyl and Differin are two of the most frequently recommended over-the-counter acne treatments in the US, and both are regularly discussed in UK skincare communities as products worth seeking out. How PanOxyl works

PanOxyl's active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, available in 4% and 10% concentrations. Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial ingredient: it works by releasing oxygen into the pore, which kills the P. acnes bacteria responsible for causing inflammatory acne. It also has a mild keratolytic effect, helping the skin shed dead cells more effectively to prevent pores becoming blocked.

How Differin works

Differin's active ingredient is adapalene 0.1%, a third-generation retinoid. Unlike benzoyl peroxide, adapalene doesn't kill bacteria directly. Instead it works by regulating skin cell turnover, preventing the build-up of dead skin cells inside the pore that leads to blockages. This makes it particularly effective against blackheads, whiteheads and comedonal acne.

Adapalene is a slower-acting ingredient. Most users don't see significant results for six to twelve weeks, and there is often an initial purging period where skin appears to worsen before it improves. Patience is essential with adapalene, but the long-term results for skin texture and congestion can be significant.

Differin is also available without a prescription in the US — something that sets it apart from many retinoids, which require a prescription in the UK and much of Europe.

Which should you use?

If your acne is primarily inflamed — red, raised spots and pustules — PanOxyl benzoyl peroxide is likely the more immediately effective choice. It tackles the bacterial cause of inflammatory acne directly and works quickly.

If your skin is more congested with blackheads, whiteheads and bumpy texture rather than active inflamed spots, Differin adapalene is better suited to your needs. It addresses the root cause of comedonal acne at a cellular level.
