Benzoyl Peroxide vs Salicylic Acid: Which Is Better for Acne?
Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are two of the most widely used ingredients for acne-prone skin. They work differently, so the better choice depends on the type of breakout and how sensitive your skin is.
What benzoyl peroxide does
Benzoyl peroxide helps reduce acne-causing bacteria and is commonly used for inflamed spots, red pimples and body acne. It is available in different strengths, but stronger products are not always more effective for every person. Begin gradually, moisturise afterwards and remember that it can bleach towels and clothing.
What salicylic acid does
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that helps remove dead skin cells from inside pores. It is particularly useful for blackheads, whiteheads, congestion and oily skin. It can still cause dryness, so introduce it slowly rather than using several exfoliating products at once.
Which should you choose?
- Choose benzoyl peroxide for inflamed acne and persistent red spots.
- Choose salicylic acid for blocked pores, blackheads and excess oil.
- For sensitive or dry skin, start with a lower frequency and a simple moisturiser.
- Avoid introducing both ingredients on the same day until you know how your skin responds.
