A Simple Acne Routine for Dry or Sensitive Skin

1 min read

Acne and dry or sensitive skin can occur together. The goal is to treat blocked pores and blemishes without damaging the skin barrier. A short, consistent routine is usually more useful than layering many active products.

Morning routine

  1. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser or rinse with lukewarm water.
  2. Apply a lightweight non-comedogenic moisturiser.
  3. Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Evening routine

  1. Cleanse gently and pat the skin dry.
  2. Use one acne active at a low frequency. Options include a lower-strength benzoyl peroxide wash, salicylic acid or adapalene.
  3. Apply moisturiser to reduce dryness and support the skin barrier.

Reduce irritation

  • Introduce only one active treatment at a time.
  • Avoid harsh scrubs, cleansing brushes and alcohol-heavy toners.
  • Use acne treatments every other day initially.
  • Reduce frequency if skin becomes painful, cracked or persistently red.

Products described as gentle can still cause a reaction, so patch testing and following the packaging directions are important. Speak to a pharmacist or clinician if acne is painful, scarring or does not improve.
