Adapalene works on the way skin cells build up within pores, helping treat existing acne and reduce new blockages. This makes it an ongoing treatment for acne-affected areas rather than a product used only on an individual spot. Results build gradually, so the treatment expectations below are important parts of choosing it.

About this formula

Taro's paraben-free gel contains a retinoid acne medicine. A paraben-free label is not a guarantee that sensitive skin will tolerate it; introduce treatment only after checking suitability and the precautions below.

What to expect

This is a leave-on acne medicine, not a rinse-off cleanser or an instant spot fix. Improvement can take up to three months. Early breakouts may appear worse, and dryness, redness or stinging can occur.

How to use

Read the supplied leaflet. The US label directs adults and children aged 12 and over to apply a thin layer across the acne-affected area once daily, after gentle cleansing and drying. Do not use more often or apply extra to speed results. Avoid eyes, lips and mouth; rinse thoroughly with water after accidental contact. Wash your hands afterwards.

Building your routine

Use a gentle cleanser and a non-comedogenic moisturiser. Limit sunlight and sunbed exposure, and use sunscreen outdoors. Avoid waxing treated skin. Scrubs, exfoliating acids and additional acne medicines can increase irritation; ask a pharmacist before combining treatments. Do not layer with another retinoid.

Important precautions

Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Do not use on cuts, eczema or sunburn, or if allergic to an ingredient. Stop for severe irritation, an allergic reaction or no improvement after three months. Do not use during pregnancy or when planning pregnancy; stop if you become pregnant. For external use only. Keep away from children.

Storage

Store at 20–25°C, protect from freezing and check the expiry date.

Active: Adapalene 0.1% (1 mg/g).

Inactive: Carbomer homopolymer type C, edetate disodium, phenoxyethanol, poloxamer 182, propylene glycol, purified water, sodium hydroxide.
